“Eating one apple a day keeps the doctor away forever,” the precious adage shows how important apples and apple juice have always been considered to everyone’s health.
Indeed, the apple is considered one of the healthiest fruits that exist, and its juice is filled with vitamins, antioxidants, and nutrients that fight against cancer, asthma, too high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases, among others.
Make your apple juice yourself
Choice of the type of apples
There are many varieties of apples that make it possible to make juice. Depending on the variety also, an apple will make more or less juice and will require more or less sugar. You should also know that it is better to take only ripe apples to make juice.
Varieties that are naturally sweet are preferred to make apple juice, such as Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, or McIntosh apples. One can also decide to mix several kinds of apples, in order to obtain a unique and incomparable juice.
Regardless of the variety of apples that one chooses to use, it is strongly advisable to use the whole of the apples, except of course the heart and the seeds, but here we think especially of the skin, which is the most important part of the fruit since it contains all the vitamins.
Preparation of apple juice
There are several ways to make apple juice: you can decide to make fresh apple juice, bottled apple juice, sweet or unsweetened apple juice, concentrated or uns concentrated, etc.
If you want to make apple juice in large quantities and keep it for several months, you squeeze it using an apple press and you can then decide either to filter it, which will produce a clear and purer juice; or to leave it cloudy, which may be less pleasant in the mouth, but it allows to keep all the vitamins and minerals, which tend to disappear with the filtration process.
If one wants to make homemade apple juice in small quantities, the technique used is quite simple. Indeed, we can be satisfied with about 1 kilo of apples, to remove the heart and especially the seeds that are toxic, then to cook them until we get a kind of compote. Afterward, the compote is filtered, which will keep only the juice, and voila.
Preservation of apple juice
Fresh apple juice is stored only for 2-3 days in the refrigerator, then it will begin its fermentation process.
There are two main techniques for keeping it longer. The first solution is to freeze the apple juice, either in a hermetically sealed bag or in a cardboard brick.
A second solution is to pasteurize apple juice, which can then easily be stored between 6 and 12 months. Thanks to pasteurization, the organisms present in the juice, which ferment it, will be destroyed.
What about industrial apple juice?
If we prefer to consume industrial apple juice, we will be faced with a large choice in-store, between those that are organic, those that contain sugar or cinnamon, etc.
In order to make a wise choice, it is recommended to take the time and look at the nutritional values present and especially to pay attention to the amount of sugar contained in the juice (maximum 20 g per 250 g), as well as the presence of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame or sucralose, which cause a delicious taste, but which are too sweet for health.
You should know that industrial apple juices are not recommended for regular consumption, but rather sporadic. Indeed, industrial juices are poor in everything contained in homemade apple juices, that is, vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and minerals. In addition, they all too often contain too much sugar, which increases cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular accidents.
With what fruits to associate apple juice
Some fruits and foods can be mixed with apple juice to produce delicious and highly vitaminized beverages. For example, apple juice can be combined with strawberries and bananas, grapefruit and lemon, celery and mint, etc.
Finally, apple juice is an easy juice to marry according to your desires and the foods you have and you can easily create your own recipes.
Apple juice contains a lot of vitamin C, fiber, iron, and other nutrients, which allows it to be beneficial for health in general but also to fight constipation in particular, to cleanse the liver, to improve blood circulation, to help people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, to improve asthma and other respiratory diseases and for weight loss as well.
Obviously, in order to get the most out of all the benefits of apple juice, it is better not to add additives or preservatives, but this also means that it must be drunk fresh and that it, therefore, lasts only 2 or 3 days in the cool.
Precautions for use
Even if it is considered that eating one apple a day is beneficial for health, and apple juice itself is extremely good for health, as explained above, it is worth paying attention to a few principles.
Regarding fresh apple juice, the more you drink, the more diuretic effects it will have. As for industrial apple juice, which has a large tendency to contain sugar and additives, it is recommended not to drink more than 2 glasses of it per day, as it may tend to form caries for example.
